The state of Louisiana now has an online death index that presently covers the years 1911-1969. You can order copies of the death certificates by mail for a fee. The database also includes a few entries prior to 1911, but copies of some earlier records may not be available. See: Louisiana Death Records Index, 1911-1969
For more online Louisiana death indexes see: Directory of Online Louisiana Death Records Indexes and Obituaries
Thanks to Elizabeth for letting me know about the Louisiana database.

Thanks, Joe (and Elizabeth)! You've just made my day! Really!!
Hi Joe!
I am awarding your blog the I Love Your Blog award (again!). You always have great info. In July 2007, you posted about the New Mexico Death Index, which enabled me to break through a long-standing and very tough brick wall. Check out http://bluebonnetcountrygenealogy.com/2007/07/22/im-soooooo-excited/ and subsequent posts. Thanks so much!
Congratulations! You are a winner!
The great and wonderful Wizard of Oz has just awarded you your heart's desire! No... Wait... There's a man behind the curtain...
Fudge! It's just the Ancestry Insider giving you an "I *Heart* Your Blog" award. He's a nobody, but he does read your blog, pert' near everyday, and published a link to it in his latest article.
But at least you get to display a cute graphic on your website and drive traffic to the Ancestry Insider's website by linking the award to him. And if you act now, the Ancestry Insider will throw in seven years of bad luck repellent! Simply forward this chain-letter award on to seven more bloggers. Otherwise all your readers will lose your address, forget you ever existed and park in your parking place at work. For complete contest rules, visit http://ancestryinsider.blogspot.com/2008/09/i-heart-your-blog-award.html
With all my *heart*,
-- The Ancestry Insider
